Top 5 Tips For Babywearing In Hot Weather

With the UK set to have record breaking temperatures as high as 38 degrees later on today, an article sharing tips about meeting your little ones needs in hot climates seemed fitting to curate. So without further ado here are my Top 5 Tips For Babywearing In Hot Weather

Feed On Demand

It doesn’t matter if you breastfeed or formula feed, expect your baby or toddler to be more thirsty than usual when the weather is particularly hot so be prepared to feed on demand. For babies over six months old, you can offer water as the first port of call.

Note: If you are currently breastfeeding, you may find your little nursling prefers breast milk little and often throughout the day and night as does my 13 month old daughter.

Please remember to also keep yourself hydrated too by carrying a water bottle with you and regularly sip on water.

Use A Muslin To Reduce Sweat

A personal favourite hack was discovering a super clever way of using a muslin cloth to reduce sweat two summer’s ago so passing on the knowledge!

Place a muslin cloth as pictured before you put on your carrier, wrap or sling of choice and put baby in.

This will wick most of the sweat usually generated between you both when babywearing in hot weather and greatly reduce a rather uncomfortable sweat fest.

Opt For Single Layer Clothing

Be mindful how you will dress both yourself and your little during hot climates. Single Layer Clothing works best for both parties with 100% cotton being the favourable material.

Cotton t-shirts, vests, maxi dresses and crop tops are popular go tos for wearers while for baby a cotton short sleeved vest and sunhat will work just fine.

Note: Cloth / reusable nappies are more cooler for babies in heat than single use disposable nappies so if you have yet to give cloth a go now might be the time to try.

Stay In The Shade Where Possible

A no brainer really but one worth reinforcing for everyone’s safety. Young babies and children are more prone to getting heat and sun stroke so seek shade as opposed to being in direct sunlight, however tempting it may be.

Carrying Positions and Different Slings, Wraps and Carriers

Wearing your older little one on your back is probably the cooler option for you both but for babies who have yet to master sitting up unaided and for those under six months of age a front carry is best unless the wearer is an experienced and confident.

There are many adjustments you can make to your sling, wrap or carrier to ensure you are both kept cool as well as the different types of materials, blends and carriers specifically designed for wearing in hot weather to potentially invest in.

This post by Dr Rosie Knowles of Carrying Matters goes into more detail should you be interested in the above.
