Lawn Treatment: How To Look After Your Lawn In Winter

Winter isn’t the best time for a vibrant, flourishing lawn. Breathe your garden back to life with lawn care treatment and a little TLC. You’ve spent a lot of time in your garden over the years – from entertaining friends and family at those weekend garden parties to watching the kids play fighting with dad in the summer, the memories are quite often priceless.

However, when winter rolls around, those luscious green blades quickly become limp, lifeless and damp as the cold temperatures take over. Not the best sight when you look out of your kitchen window!

Instead of wishing for a lawn to die for in the miserable months of the year, there’s so much you can do to look after it as best you can, and to prevent any long-term problems that the harsh winter weather can bring.

It can be one of the most important seasons of the year for lawn treatment! Here’s how you can help:

Prepare

Before winter gets into the swing of things, we need to prepare for whatever weather nature throws at us.

Begin during the months of October and November, where you can clear away any debris and fallen leaves from the lawn.

Give it a final mow, but just enough so the stem bases won’t be blocked from any sunlight. You don’t want your lawn to turn yellow!

Aerate

It’s important to ensure that your lawn can drain the water that hits it when we next get that torrential downpour. If not, your lawn will be sludgy and full of soil.

The easiest way to aerate your lawn is to give it a good spike with a garden fork, which will allow the water to go through the soil instead of collecting on its surface.

If you have a little more time on your hands, brush some sand or grit into the holes you’ve created to stop them from closing back up.

Feed

To kill moss, provide your lawn with vital plant nutrients and to protect your lawn when the colder months draw in, it’s so important to feed your lawn with the right treatment.

In preparation for winter, you can opt for autumn lawn food which will strengthen the roots further and encourage a great looking lawn when spring comes back around.

Treat

It’s sometimes inevitable that you’ll encounter some patches of bare soil in your lawn. Perhaps it’s on a section of grass that you use often, or that the summer weather or moss has been the culprit.

Whatever the reason, you need to treat it sooner rather than later. You can buy grass seed, soil and fertiliser in order to patch up your bare sections.

As long as you follow the instructions to the letter and have a little bit of patience, then there is no reason why you shouldn’t have a beautiful lawn in a few months.

Relax

Be patient. During winter, there’s usually no need to water your lawn due to the amount of rain and snow we get.

The best thing to do is leave your lawn treatment to work its magic and encourage your family and any pets to stay away until your new grass has formed.

In the spring time, you’ll have an incredibly beautiful lawn ready for you to make some new memories in the garden.
