MyPure: Now Solutions 100% Natural Coconut Oil Review – My Thoughts On Latest Beauty Trend Oil Pulling

This is my third consecutive month working with the MyPure team as one of their green beauty reviewers and this time around I wanted to do something a little different. Rather than write a standard review of the product I had chosen, coconut oil in this instance, I wanted to dedicate an entire post experimenting with the latest beauty buzz known as oil pulling using Now Solutions 100% Natural Coconut Oil.

What Is Oil Pulling?

To summarise, Oil Pulling is an Indian folk remedy going back thousands of years with claims that ‘pull the toxins out’ to reduce inflammation. Practitioners of oil pulling claim it is capable of improving oral and systemic health, including a benefit in conditions such as whiter teeth, fresh breath, general oral health AND wait for it… reduce symptoms such as headaches, migraines, asthma and acne!

A pretty impressive claim, even by my standards. Through research the main benefit of oil pulling is that it reduces the amount of harmful bacteria in ones mouth.

If we were to stop and think for a second, there are literally hundreds if not THOUSANDS of different types of bacteria in everyone’s mouth. Whilst some of these bacteria’s are friendly, others are not and are harmful to our oral health which can sometimes spread to other parts of our bodies too.

It is common knowledge that bacteria in the mouth can create a “bio-film” on our teeth. This is best described as the thin layer that noticeably sits on the surface of our teeth technically known and referred to as “plaque.”

Plaque on ones teeth is normal to some extent, but too much of this can cause an array of problems oral health problems, including bad breath, yellow teeth, gum inflammation, gingivitis and cavities to name a few.

How To Oil Pull

The process is pretty simple to be honest. On an empty stomach, you simply put one teaspoon of coconut oil in you mouth and begin swishing the oil around your mouth, gently pushing and pulling the oil through your teeth for a duration of 15 – 20 minutes max.

Once finished, ensure to dispose of the oil by spitting it out directly into a bucket or the loo. Having spent time reading other oil pulling reviews it is advised not to spit the contents out in the sink for it could potentially cause a blockage (we don’t want that inconvenience do we?)

My Decision To Oil Pull

Fascinated by the current trend of ‘oil pulling’ the alleged benefits and after receiving mixed reviews from some of my fellow blogger friends about this ever popular and growing trend, in true Danielle style I was inquisitive and determined to find out for myself if the claims of whiter teeth and general oral health were just another fad doing the rounds on the internet or if there were any truths behind the impressive health claims made.

My Experience of Oil Pulling

I strongly despise oil type textures in my mouth! I simply just can’t deal.

When I was younger my Mother made my siblings and I take a teaspoon of cod liver oil each day and without fail you could always count on me to constantly gag when the oil first goes in my mouth and when attempting to swallow it.

The coconut oil pulling experience brings back these exact experiences for me when first putting the oil in my mouth but as you spit out the oil as opposed to swallowing it, it makes the process somewhat bearable (but not totally).

I tend to oil pull straight after brushing my teeth in the mornings and just before going to bed. This allows me to continue with my usual routine off jumping in the shower, brushing my hair and cleanse / moisturise my face to ensure no time is lost (especially in the mornings).

Downsides of Oil Pulling

My only complaint is that oil pulling is loooonnnnng!

To constantly swish oil in ones month for a total of 15 – 20 minutes with no break is well, erm pretty tiring and very taxing on ones jaws. At one point this week I swear my jaws were boarding cramp (ouch!)

Verdict

I have only been oil pulling day and night consecutively for a just over 2 weeks now and whilst I have noticed my mouth feeling cleaner, I cannot say it has made any difference to whitening my teeth at all. Maybe the 2 week duration is short to determine if this claim is true.

What I can confirm however is a noticeable reduction in plaque. My teeth no longer have that noticeable annoying texture sitting on the surface and my breath is fresher when I wake up in the mornings. My teeth also has a certain shine to them nowadays (a happy lady).

Now my mouth may have felt cleaner throughout the 2 week duration of my oil pulling experience but think a mouthwash made with natural ingredients will deliver the same results with regards to oral health and fresher breath.

As for the claims of curing headaches and migraines, something I have unfortunately experienced a few times this week due to the dry hot and muggy heat England has been getting, oil pulling made no difference to my discomfort in reducing the throbbing and found that after deciding to take a power nap, my splitting headaches went away naturally.

I have decided to continue with this experiment for a further two – three weeks in order to determine if oil pulling is the natural answer and way to obtaining whiter teeth.

For me, the jury is still out on Oil Pulling, but it has been an eventful experience nonetheless, one I am glad I took part in to gain my own thoughts on this ancient folk remedy and look forward to updating you all on any further findings or results I experience once a have completed my little experiment to unearth my own truth on oil pulling.
