Since completing London River Rat Race back in August of this year, it is fair to say that I caught the obstacle bug (it was inevitable really) and in 8 days time, will see me complete my 2nd 10 km Rat Race obstacle course in the form of Men’s Health Survival of The Fittest, this time with my Kickboxing family running by my side (Sensei included).

I am especially looking forward to completing this event, for Men’s Health have come up with a new ‘uber urban’ location, Wembley Park, an area I once lived close too in my childhood years so know the surrounding areas very well!

The 10 km course will loop around Wembley Stadium before taking eager participants through a gauntlet of challenging obstacles packed in on top of one another. We are told to prepare for dunking’s, dirt and the odd diversion through a river.

Here are a few of the obstacle’s I am personally looking forward to tackling with my team…

Army Assault Course

Despite my lack of upper body strength at present, I am really looking forward to challenging myself with the cargo nets, cat-crawls, monkey bars, up n’ under to name a few. I’m a complete sucker for hardcore training regimes and an army assault course sounds right up my street!

Giant Slippery Slope

Packing a 45 degree incline accompanied with a bit of baby oil thrown in for good measure, getting up this beast of slope will prove to tougher and taxing on one’s entire body than first imagined.

Urban Jungle

This derelict zone will match your own physical state at this stage of the course. Wrecked cars, stacks of pallets, oil drums, truck tyres and industrial detritus litter your path as you enter the Urban Jungle. I sense the team, especially the men in the group will LOVE this part of the course.

Inflatable Fun

Ahhh memories! These fun inflatables were present at London River Rat Race and definitely brought the inner child out of me as I struggled to keep on my feet whilst occasionally falling down and scrambling to get back up again.

Mud Run

Prepared to get muddy as hell as you make your way through big yellow industry skips that are conveniently filled with knee deep muck, followed by a cat crawl through muddy waters!

This superwoman you see before your eyes all smiles and unfazed as she completes the mud run section with a generous hosing down is fellow fitness blogger Fitcetera who completed the course last year. Proof that girls and women alike can BOSS the Men’s Health course too!

I am really looking forward to completing this course and creating fond memories and laughs a plenty with my kb friends.

For the past 6 weeks, Sunday lie ins have been a myth as the majority of the team including yours truly take on a grueling 2 hour circuit which includes hill sprints up and down these steep hills a total of 12  times, running laps around the park, pull ups, plank variations, press-ups, box jumps and belly crawls are completed all in attempt to build strength in areas we don’t normally focus on in the hope we feel confident and prepared to tackle the obstacles thrown at us on the day.

If after reading this article you visualize yourself and a few friends making your way around the iconic sites of Wembley Stadium and surrounding areas, there are still ways in which you can sign up!

There are a few options to can take to complete Men’s Health Survival of the Fittest by night, which is half the distance at 5 km with the same amount of obstacles in the longer distance, thus really challenging your strength.

You can also race for a FIVER, should you be willing to volunteer to help out on the day whilst completing the course yourself in last wave of the day.

If you’ve already bitten the bullet and signed up already, my team and I may just see you there!
